How it all started...
Johnston Heights Church has existed on the corner of 96 Avenue and 152 Street for sixty years, and it’s easy to see God’s faithfulness to us as we strive to be faithful to Him by Effectively Making Jesus Known in Every Community He Places Us!
All the way back in 1929 two ladies, who were students at Vancouver Bible Institute, came to Surrey every week to run a Sunday School in the Green Timbers area. Shortly after, in 1930, a piece of property was donated and a small building was built in only a single day west of Fraser Highway and 152 Street. The next day Sunday School was in session! This Sunday School was named Green Timbers Mission. Another Sunday School started on 104 Avenue and 156 Street, this was called the Hjorth Road Mission. In 1958, both Green Timbers Mission and Hjorth Road Mission merged to form Johnston Heights Evangelical Free Church. A property was found at 152 Street and 96 Avenue and groundbreaking for a building began on April 4, 1958. The first service was held later that year on October 19. There were 56 members in the newly formed congregation. The church experienced growth and soon the original building was too small, so in 1969 a new building [which serves as our auditorium to this day] was built. The first service was on December 17, 1969. Ten years later, in 1979, the education and office wing was built to bridge the two buildings together.
For 60 years Johnston Heights Church has continued to reach out to the community and has grown along with Surrey. Nearly 700 people call Johnston Heights Church their home today!
